In October 2003, Kyushu University and the Kyushu Institute of Design merged and this center was built as a new joint educational research facility for utilizing study results from the two institutions and for creating a new paradigm through assimilation of artistic sensitivity and science, while also fostering promising human resources. This center has four educational research departments: the Department of Digital Image Creation, the Department of Real Objects Design, the Department of Applied Digital Information and the Department of Design Archives. Their activities are as follows:
*Educational research on high-level artistic and scientific expression skills by integrating artistic sensibility and logical thinking
*Educational research by understanding and analyzing human sensitivity scientifically and by applying the results to designing
*Planning and implementation of interdisciplinary research on integrating artistic sensibility and science
*Presentation and propagation of the research results to industrial circles
*Dissemination of the interdisciplinary research results to international and local communities
