We aim to foster professionals of visual image design who design and plan diversified information environments, including visual information such as graphic images and projected images, and their media, in an attempt to enable valuable information for us to be composed visually and esthetically, processed, and conveyed. To attain this goal, we cultivate creative designers who have extensive knowledge of our sensory traits such as visual sensation, science and engineering regarding mathematical and physical quality of visual information, and furthermore, who are also able to think and process visual information on their own initiative.

With the aim of accomplishing the educational philosophy and goals mentioned above, the Department of Visual Communication Design nurtures designers by organically organizing the following three disciplines: Visual Communication, Visual Image Design, and Image Engineering, through systematic and practical education. 1) Visual Communication teaches visual nervous system, sensation, perception, psychology, the basic theory of art history, and basic science. 2) Visual Image Design studies teaches digital design and planning of visual signs, advertising, projected-image expression, and artistic expression. 3) Image Engineering covers recent rapidly advancing fields, including optoelectronics, image data analysis/processing, and image/projected-image information systems. Students receive lectures on basic specialized subjects, starting the freshman year, and they gradually progress to hands-on projects, exercises, and experiments. Thus, a practical and comprehensive education is provided.

In order to carry out systematic and specialized instruction covering the wide range of domains mentioned above, we want students who have strong academic ability in various subjects, and practical ability as well. We also want those with great potential, who are enthusiastic about developing new academic domains related to visual information, and putting their knowledge to practical use.

It is essential for those who wish to apply for the department to have a keen interest in and an understanding of varied fields linking people and technology. In screening applicants, we examine scholastic abilities in fields already studied, as well as practical ability.

*For applicants who take the Admissions Office Examination, we welcome highly-motivated students with distinctive personalities who have been enthusiastically involved in a wide range of activities, and who have gained meaningful experience beyond mere possession of basic academic ability. Therefore, we exempt such applicants from an individual scholastic test, and instead we select outstanding students through a screening of documents as well as the evaluation of the overall results of the National Center Examination, and the test of practical skills.
